Straight Forward Entreprenurship or Taking Advantage of Others?

As we become busy with our day-to-day lives, it's easy to take the little things for granted. Because we expect everything to run smoothly all of the time, when things do develop differently than we expect them to, it can certainly have a huge impact upon us.

This is certainly what happened in China last summer with the 60-mile traffic jam that lasted for two weeks. It didn't take the locals long to determine that a little bit of money could be made from the situation. When situations like these arise, what do they mean for the rest of us? Have we lost a little empathy for others? Are we prone to take advantage when the opportunity presents itself?

  1. I think it would be very very cold to be out in the middle of the highway when snow is on the ground, in the picture it looked like it was also windy so that would make it even more cold, so the people were very hungry and cold.

  2. I think I will have to agree with the first paragraph, we always think that every thing is going to go smoothly but we can't say that because we don't know that for sure. I feel like we need to be aware of other people and what is going on in the world.

  5. I think that is unfair. The government or someone should of came to help them. People shouldn't be stuck on there like that. I think if that happened again they should get help right away. I am surprised that the people got stuck didn't sue them.

  6. I think that is unfair. We should help others. If something like that happened here would others jump in to help? Maybe they would if We would help them. Maybe they would too just to set an example. I think compared to other places we have it easy and we should be grateful, and maybe next time we will think twice before we complain.

  7. That's a long traffic jam and i think that they should of had a police officer directing traffic.Than again i think they should have more lanes because I saw 2 lanes and with a 60 mile traffic jam that's long. That should be a violation of a law or something. Then again i would try to stay wit it and try to get out of it and take an exit ramp to somewhere not there.

  8. When situations like these happen we don't really pay attention to it. Usually we will feel bad for them, but we don't do anything about it. To be honest I am one of those people that feels bad but doesn't really care. Like for example that traffic jam in China, sure I feel bad for them but I'm not gonna do anything about it.

  9. People don't pay attention to these kinda things. I don't care about the money, if you pay attention to it it might not seem so show you laziness. It's not like a 13 year old girl is going to stop a 6 mile traffic gam just like that.

  10. I think that if people would pay attention more often they would understand and care about these things. Everybody should try and help in some way. If they did we wouldn't have problems like these. Its not like a we could stop a 6 mile long traffic jam but people could at least try to help them.

  11. So what should people do about it? How can we help? Is it acceptable when no one does anything? Why or why not? aamidnight mentions that we don't always pay attention when others are having a bad day, but this lasted a lot longer than just a day. What if this happened in Emporia, would that make it different for Angie or Allison? What about charging $20-30 for a bottle of water? Is that okay? Should it be? Think about spending two weeks without food, water, or a toilet to use. How would that be for you?

  12. the people should help them out.We can help by seeing if they are alright and get police there quicker. It is not Acceptable when no one does anything they should at least try to help them.It is not okay to pay 20-30 dollars for food.It would suck because i would have to go to the bathroom and I would be hungry and thirsty.

  14. I would feel sad and hungry. I would feel like a slave. I think I wouldn't last another minute in those harsh winds. I wish there were flying cars. I would feel devastated and poor. I wish winter had never come. I think it would suck to pay $20 for water in a bottle because I'd be poor and be making a low wage.

  16. even with supplies running low you have to scavenge as much food as you can. water is a different story because with no help low water can be a dangerous thing. I cannot believe that the authorities were not informed about this! It's a scary thought being stranded in the middle of traffic jam for two days!

  17. When that Kind of stuff happens I feel sorry and wish that their was a way they didn't have to go trough that stuff. Not to mention People are trying to make money off of other peoples loses. I think we have lost empathy for others why make money off a situation when you can help them instead. I wouldn't If someones family member where to have died and you where on the will for $2000 you would just go to collect your money not even caring about the family member who had pasted away. It's sad.

  18. I feel sorry when this happens, and it makes want people to treat each other fairly then taking advantage of each other. As my dad told me money isn't everything so people using people to get more money is unfair.

  19. People don't really pay attention to things like this. I know that almost everyone has been in a traffic jam before, but not one like this. I think that the people that were selling the stuff to other people were really, I guess, fair almost. They saw there opportunity to make money quick, because people were in need. They did sell the bare necessities and I guess some people sold stuff that others wouldn't think people would need but they did. If that makes sense. But, they are taking advantage of them. There is a part that says that it's wrong and there's a part that says what they did was right.
