When Books Make You Think...

Recently in our Communications class we've been listening to audio books. Our current selection, Amos Fortune, has been chosen to help us learn more about early life in the Thirteen Colonies, particularly in relation to the lives of slaves in the U.S.

We know that the people who were forced to leave their homelands to work for others did not have an easy life by any means. We know that their owners were often cruel, if not outright brutal toward those slaves who were in their care. We also know that slaves had little to no protection under the law.

Based on the book that you've listened to so far, what has surprised you about the slaves' experiences? What have you learned that you wouldn't have expected to have happened? What would you have done if you lived during that period?

  1. I am surprised that some of the women got free again because of one man. I have learned a lot about slaves but I have never listened or even read a book about them. I would have tried to escape and do everything that my master told me to do, because I would not want to get punished, the way they described it in the book. I also feel bad for the African Americans too because all that was different was their skin tone and of course their different personalities that is it. THE END! :D

  2. I dont think I would be able to live like they did. We have so much technology today it would be hard. It surprised me though that some women had freedom, I didnt think any women did.

  5. I have learned a lot in Amos Fortune. I was very surprised to hear that the women were free because of only one man, that wasn't something I expected. I think Amos was very brave to do everything he did, even thought he lost trust in everyone else. To be honest when I found out we were going to listen to an audio book about slave life, I thought it was going to be very boring and uninteresting. So far this book has been very interesting and wasn't at all what i expected.

  6. That would be hard to live like that, cause now we have everything we need to live in America, I couldn't imagine being a slave back then getting sold, having to do work and not getting anything in return, or when they try to run away then they get a very bad punishment or get killed.

  7. That life would be hard to live. Many people died, were hurt, or scared of the white folks. In this time the blacks were like "The whites are the bad guys we want nothing with them." Sometimes the whites were good the black. But God made this happen for a reason, to show us how to respect each other.

i think we should read more stories about slaves to know how they were treated and how they got smart.

  12. It sounds like many of you are referring to the hard lives that the African people found themselves forced to live once they arrived to our country. I think I would have tried to escape to The North as well. I'm not sure that I would have been able to handle other people not acknowledging that I am a human being. I was surprised to hear how quickly those who were part of Amos's tribe forgot their own language. That was a shock to me.

  13. Re: I am felt sad when I heard about the story. It was interesting. Why were the Africans taken from there home. Why did the whites take them. Ok I don't understand why the guy in the story didn't just marry once? Did he get all of his wives freedom I didn't hear one of them that didn't get freedom.

  14. Both stories had slaves. Amos got married because he was free. Other non-free slaves could not marry. Both stories were in the same time period.

  19. I think that Amos Fortune had a good life even though he was a slave. But I think that it would be hard to be a slave. Cause if you did something wrong you would get betten. But he did get a good slave maker.

  21. I learned that kids could be free if their mother was free. I'm surprised that slaves were very suicidal. If I lived in this time I would run away to my freedom.

  22. I feel that even though he was a slave he didn't get stuck with an evil owner. He had a pretty good life. He was free in the end he had a kid, and a wife what more can he want. He worked very hard for everything he had. I liked the book.

  24. I would have stopped slavery cause it is wrong to whip people for a little mistake. So what they are a different color that is just how god made them.

  25. I think he had a good life unlike other slaves he had more freedom then most slaves. He ended up free with a wife and child as well, but he only got this for working so hard. so I like this book for showing how much hard work can get you.

  26. Amos sure lived a good life. This was one of those stories that really makes you think about how you treat people differently from others just because of how they look or how they act.
Slavery was wrong, in my opinion. I, personally, treat animals like they are a human being, and I can't imagine treating them wrong. But treating someone of your own kind different just because they are a different shape, size, race, or just because you want to? That's not humane. Imagine someone treating you like that.
I can understand why Amos didn't want to be a slave, and why he treated everyone as if they were the same. He was a very good guy and was very kind to everyone and everything as if it were his.
I would have escaped to the North as well. I wouldn't have put-up with all the grief that the slaves got for being a different color.
