Daily Struggles - What it Means to be Poor in America

For the past few years, the economy in the United States (and around the world) has been challenging to say the least. You recently read an article about minimum wage in Australia and how some workers are underpaid. Even though the minimum wage in Australia is much higher than it is here, it still has an impact on the lifestyle of the people who live there.

Be sure to check Edmodo for the necessary videos to watch, articles to read , and games to play before responding here.

What does that mean in the US? Did you know that 1 in 3 working families are considered Low Income Families? So, what if you were stuck with a low paying job? How would that affect you and your family? Could you survive? How would you feel about that? What were the most surprising statistics that you read or stories that you heard? Why?

  1. I think its cruel and hurtful and disturbing its kinda weird because i thought everyone were right at the line and it turns out that 1 in 3 were below the line.

  2. I think that people don't deserve all this. I was thinking to myself why can't the USA just pitch in a little bit, or why can't Obama try to do something about this? We can't just sit there and watch those people suffer. I don't think I do this, and even have enough money to buy some things that I would like to buy. I would feel depressed, lonely, and so many other feelings.

  3. I think this is horrible. No, I didn't know that. I wouldn't be able to help my family and myself. I think I would have to try to find a better paying job. I might survive but it would be a minimum chance. I would feel very sad. This is very serious because more than 1000 people are living in this situation. This can happen if your job pay isn't that much.

  5. I feel sorry for the people who don't have many things like.....clothes and money. The economy should really support those in need.the government needs to provide a cost of living increase for those people receiving minimum wage.

  8. I find it upsetting that people are poor. My heartbreaks just seeing them on the street. I don't know why people just don't do something about it. I also don't know why the people that are homeless just don't go get a job.

  9. If my family was getting paid low income I would be mad and I would sell my computer and I would sell a lot of things just so that I could just live without dying before I turn 40.

  10. I feel that banks are one of the main causes of poor families. Banks have gummed up the economy with mortgages, loans, and other taxes sucking up the money from the citizens. Please trust me when i say that "BANKS ARE HERE TO MAKE MONEY" if you add it up. They lend you money and for 5 years you may not even be paying back the loan at all! just mortgages so banks use this combination to take money from you! and I believe that's how poverty happens

  11. Well if they are being underpaid there but is still more here, they shouldn't worry. Things might be more expensive though that's still more money then here. I would have a doubt in my mind that they probably have a economy then us. We have the riches though we the poor here in this world too.

  13. In the us it means the we are not being paid near enough if their are people who get paid more than double our minimum wage and still being underpaid. I did not know that 1 in 3 working families are low income families. If I was stuck with a low paying job I would not be to happy. This would be a very bad effect on my family because we may not be able to by our kids toys they want. I may be able to survive. I would feel really bad if I could not get my kids toys that they wanted.

If this did happen to me, I would feel that the world is going to end, or that it would never end, it would just keep on going. I would aslo feel depressed, lonely, and useless.

  15. That means in the U.S. most people are low on they're income.
No, I did not know that 1 in 3 working families were considered Low Income Families.
I would not survive with a low paying job, and I would have to use my resources wisely.
It would effect me by having to: not use a lot of food, keep lights, and water turned off, when going to the store buy what I need not what I want, and be careful with clothes, and shoes.
I would not survive, so I would feel like I need more money. I can't live with just this I got bills to pay, mouths to feed, shopping for what I'm running low on.
The whole sushi thing in Australia is just crazy, because when I think of a businesses I think that everyone get the same pay, but I guess things aren't how they seam to be.

  16. So, what if you were stuck with a low paying job?
I would have to really think and use the money wisely each time. I would spend 45% of the money to pay for food and the other 55% paying rent so I can have a house and car.

How would that affect you and your family?
It would effect us majorly we would have to sell most of our things to keep up with rent and others.

    Could you survive?
I could survive not Because I have money but because I have friend and family that love me. With them supporting me through everything.

How would you feel about that?
I feel that someone should help them donate more than a hat you don't like no more, Why not a homemade Meal. I feel that it's not fair that someone should get treated that way.

What were the most surprising statistics that you read or stories that you heard?
The Australian sushi thing was so unfair. Who would treat people unevenly. Everyone should get paid the same amount of money they deserve.

  17. Okay, I read this aloud to my mom and at the end, when they said that Biden was worried about his net worth being as low as $70,000, when at $5.85 an hour, it would take nearly 12,000 hours, or nearly six years, to earn that amount. I personally think that it's people like him that should be thankful for what they got. When they say that they "understand" how we feel about being poor and then he goes on about having a net worth of $70,00, when we have $5.85 an hour. Some people could ONLY DREAM of having that much. He should be thankful to have what he's got while he has it.
It means more people are going to be stressed out knowing that there are people out there being paid THREE times as much as we are. People like that shouldn't be worried about running out of money, they should pitch in a little bit and maybe save a couple hundred starving kids by giving them a loaf of bread or donating rice or meat.
Yes I did know that there are 1 in 3 Families considered Low Income Families, those are the ones that we help and donate to when we donate money clothes are toys and food to Salvation Army.
I would try to make the best of it, and instead of thinking about me all the time, I would think about the other around me that are being paid less than me and try to help out as much as I can, even if that meant skipping breakfast or lunch. I know that millions of kids have probably gone days without food and or water.
It would definitely make things much different around the house. We would probably sell the unnecessary things, like video games, television, iPods, etc.
It would really rub on us and make it really hard on us and our conversations at the table, but I know that if everyone pitched in we could make it.
Very stressed and "tight" almost, like you were trapped in a box so to say. But thankful all at the same time that we were able to make it that far.
That Joe Biden was concerned about running out of money. You know the rest, I have probably mentioned it 10 times by now. ;-)
There are kids starving out there! Families that have to live on the streets and scrape for every last penny or food they can get! And we are worried about running out of hairspray or what to wear to school or what to bring for lunch.
Sometimes, and I can't blame the people who point at us and say it when they don't have it, we just might, just maybe, are spoiled. Sometimes it makes us look like spoiled brats when we complain about our hair being wavy because we ran out of time to straighten it.
